Some milestones redefine an entire craft.

This week, we witnessed one — as Sturia, France’s leading caviar house, unveiled the world’s first PGI-certified caviar in Singapore. Hosted at Le Pristine, the afternoon unfolded like a quiet symphony of patience, craftsmanship, and conscience — a moment where heritage met innovation, and the story of French luxury found new life on our shores.

The World’s First PGI-Certified Caviar

For the first time in history, Sturia has become the world’s first caviar producer to receive PGI (Protected Geographical Indication) certification — a recognition usually reserved for the greats: Champagne, Roquefort, Bordeaux. This isn’t just a label. It’s a promise — that every bead of Caviar d’Aquitaine is traceable to its birthplace in southwest France, shaped by the purity of its waters and the care of the people who raise each sturgeon by hand.

More Than a Mark of Origin

The PGI symbol carries weight far beyond geography. It represents integrity — clean water, ethical farming, and real people behind every bead. At the heart of Sturia’s philosophy lies a “pyramid of respect”: respect the fish, respect the water, respect the people tending to both. For the team, this isn’t a slogan — it’s a way of life that stretches over years. Seven to eight for the average sturgeon, fourteen for the Beluga. Each harvest is a meditation in patience, a long dialogue between nature and nurture.

Redefining Luxury

In a world chasing newness, Sturia stands for something timeless — luxury with conscience. As the founder shared, “Luxury is not luxury if it does not respect the people, the environment, and the heritage behind it.” Their annual publication reads like a love letter to French artisans — from caviar farmers to couture houses — reminding us that true refinement is born of ethics, not excess.

Protected, Preserved, and Passed On

The PGI system, backed by INAO (the French authority for origin and quality), ensures transparency from pond to plate. It protects producers from imitation and assures diners that what they’re tasting is genuine — the original expression of its terroir. Now recognized under the EU–Singapore Free Trade Agreement, Sturia’s next step is securing this protection here in Singapore — continuing the legacy of authenticity for discerning palates across Asia.

A Taste from the Past, For the Future

As the final words of the afternoon lingered, we were reminded why we gather around food in the first place — to connect, to learn, to taste a story that began long before us. Sturia’s mission is simple yet profound: to bring back the caviar of yesterday — pure, honest, and alive with humanity — for the generations to come.

Under the soft light of Le Pristine, spoon in hand, we tasted not just luxury, but legacy. And it was beautiful.
